Understanding the Types of Fibroids — Dr. Ramya Mishra, FertiJoy IVF & Fertility

Fibroids, or uterine leiomyomas, are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus and they are more common than most women realize. What’s equally important to know is that not all fibroids are the same. Their location within the uterus determines their type, which in turn affects your symptoms, fertility, and treatment options.

According to Dr. Ramya Mishra, Fertility & IVF Specialist at FertiJoy IVF & Fertility, “Understanding the type of fibroid is the first step toward effective treatment. Every woman’s body is different, and so should be her approach to care.”

Here’s a quick overview of the 4 main types of fibroids:

  • Intramural Fibroids – Grow within the muscular wall of the uterus and are most common. They can cause heavy periods, pelvic pain, and abdominal pressure.
  • Subserosal Fibroids – Develop on the outer surface of the uterus. These may grow large and press on nearby organs, leading to bloating or frequent urination.
  • Submucosal Fibroids – Grow into the uterine cavity and are less common but can affect fertility and cause severe bleeding.
  • Pedunculated Fibroids – Attached by a thin stalk, these can twist and cause sudden pain requiring medical attention.

Dr. Ramya emphasizes that early diagnosis and personalized treatment is the key to a sucessful pregancy.

“Fibroids are completely treatable. With right guidance, women can manage their symptoms, protect their fertility, and live healthier lives.”
